The points you were making are fine; furthermore you presented a pretty strong argument. Your borderline ad hominem use of ‘white male privilege’ was what i took exception to.
I’d like to start by saying that I am white and male. I have privilege. If I said otherwise I’d either be a fool or a liar. I never deny my privilege. I agree that we live in a patriarchal society that isn’t even anywhere near being post-racial.
But to use this fact, as I believe you did, as a means of invalidating your opponents argument isn’t appropriate at all and it’s the kind of thing that gives certain conservatives a leg to stand on when they do deny the notion of privilege.

The bible is no more or less valid than the holy myths of any culture. Respect is not agreement, it is nice though. expecialy when it the cornerstone of out literary culture, spawned more anti-authoritarian movements than Marx, Bakunin, Proudhon or Chomsky combined…
with love from an atheist xI’m not sure what counts as a position of authority but I have gone to church every single Sunday since I was a child, plus I have taken a course on the history of the Bible’s time so I think I know what I’m talking about. Every one of those statements is exactly true.
I also am not sure why you brought in other myths when I did not. I was not trying to say the Bible is wrong and the other ones are correct. I’m just absolutely sick of people preaching the Bible as if it were written yesterday. The social rhetoric of the time is so foreign to the average Christian that they have no idea what they are actually reading. I was not in anyway trying to validate other myths by downplaying Christianity’s. I can say with great certainty that the other myths were actually regarded as myths by their followers, where the Bible takes place in a much more worldly setting causing it to be taken way too seriously - THAT is Joseph Campbell so you can argue with him about that.
The reason I posted this was because I am absolutely sick of Christians being so absolutely ignorant of the history of their own religion. I have very few serious things against Christianity as a religion, but the majority of its followers are just that - blind ass followers.

The point being that other myths are culturally important and liberating in huge parts of the world. while they are oppressive, they are less oppressive then, and contradictory too capitalism, poverty and higher-achy. If your white male (american?) privalge means you can’t appreciate that, that sucks, but don’t bullshit that we are some how fundamentally improved in the last two thousand years, coz there is no evidence of that,and it positions capitalism (the current social totality) at the top of a developmental ladder - which is offensive to those that have been subjugated by it (that’s all the not-white not-male people of the world). Anarchistreview may have been wrong when it came to some of his facts, but lets not forget that many religious people like to wilfully ignore scientific facts, replacing them with hocus pocus gibberish, and this can be very harmful. Arguing against people who have the freedom to criticise religion and at the same time painting the broad brush term “white male privilege” bullshit as if that has anything to do with it. Stop name calling, and stop generalising all white males to be the devil. It’s this kind shit that divides us.
